Speedup estimates for some variants of the parallel implementations of the branch-and-bound method

The efficiency of parallel implementations of the branch-and-bound method in discrete optimization problems is considered. A theoretical analysis and comparison of two parallel implementations of this method is performed. A mathematical model of the computation process is constructed and used to obtain estimates of the maximum possible speedup. Examples of problems in which none of these two parallel implementations can speed up the computations are considered.     

Semiconvergence in distribution of random closed sets with application to random optimization problems

The paper considers upper semicontinuous behavior in distribution of sequences of random closed sets. Semiconvergence in distribution will be described via convergence in distribution of random variables with values in a suitable topological space. Convergence statements for suitable functions of random sets are proved and the results are employed to derive stability statements for random optimization problems where the objective function and the constraint set are approximated simultaneously. Time Consistent Dynamic Risk Measures

We introduce the time-consistency concept that is inspired by the so-called “principle of optimality” of dynamic programming and demonstrate – via an example – that the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) need not be time-consistent in a multi-stage case. Then, we give the formulation of the target-percentile risk measure which is time-consistent and hence more suitable in the multi-stage investment context. Finally, we also generalize the value-at-risk and CVaR to multi-stage risk measures based on the theory and structure of the target-percentile risk measure.

Non-Euler–Lagrangian Pareto-optimality Conditions for Dynamic Multiple Criterion Decision Problems

In this paper the problem of verifying the Pareto-optimality of a given solution to a dynamic multiple-criterion decision (DMCD) problem is investigated. For this purpose, some new conditions are derived for Pareto-optimality of DMCD problems. In the literature, Pareto-optimality is characterized by means of Euler-Lagrangian differential equations. There exist problems in production and inventory control to which these conditions cannot be applied directly (Song 1997). Thus, it is necessary to explore new conditions for Pareto-optimality of DMCD problems. With some mild assumptions on the objective functionals, we develop necessary and/or sufficient conditions for Pareto-optimality in the sprit of optimization theory. Both linear and non-linear cases are considered.     

ALICE实验中光子谱仪的触发选判机制的模拟研究

对ALICE实验光子谱仪的触发选判机制进行了模拟研究, 内容包括: 1) 对光子谱仪的能量重建性能进行了研究, 通过计算机模拟检验光子谱仪探测器对大横动量范围的入射粒子的能量重建性能; 2) 对光子谱仪探测器的事件触发效率进行了研究, 通过计算机模拟分析触发阈值的选取并计算触发效率; 3) 对光子谱仪探测器的事件触发频率进行了研究, 通过计算机模拟对p-p和Pb-Pb两种碰撞模式下的触发频率分别进行了估算和讨论.     

Calorimetric studies of the growth of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans in the presence of nitrocellulose

Calorimetric results indicate that nitrocellulose (NC)-induced changes in the metabolism of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans 1388 are caused by both chemical (nitrate) and physical (biofilm formation) factors. Nitrate added to lactate-based culture medium with nitrocellulose competed for the electron flux from lactate and suppressed the bacterial sulfidogenesis and growth. The presence of an insoluble compound (carbon backbone of the polymer) induced the creation of a biofilm-like structure with its own metabolism.     

The statement and numerical solution of an optimization problem in X-ray tomography

A nonclassical problem is considered for the transport equation with coefficients depending on the energy of radiation. The task is to find the discontinuity surfaces for the coefficients of the equation from measurements of the radiation flux leaving the medium. For this tomography problem, an optimization problem is stated and numerically analyzed. The latter consists in determining the radiation energy that ensures the best reconstruction of the unknown medium. A simplified optimization problem is solved analytically.

Shape sensitivity of a plane crack front

The 3D‐elasticity model of a solid with a plane crack under the stress‐free boundary conditions at the crack is considered. We investigate variations of a solution and of energy functionals with respect to perturbations of the crack front in the plane. The corresponding expansions at least up to the second‐order terms are obtained. The strong derivatives of the solution are constructed as an iterative solution of the same elasticity problem with specified right‐hand sides. Using the expansion of the potential and surface energy, we consider an approximate quadratic form for local shape optimization of the crack front defined by the Griffith criterion. To specify its properties, a procedure of discrete optimization is proposed, which reduces to a matrix variational inequality. At least for a small load we prove its solvability and find a quasi‐static model of the crack growth depending on the loading parameter. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
